Bells will be ringing during what is billed as Windsor’s largest gathering of handbell ringers.
The Silver Bells handbell choir will host handbell ringers from Michigan and Ontario for a South West Ontario Handbell Festival concert on Aug. 26 at Emmanuel United Church.
“We are thrilled to share our passion for handbell music with the community,” said Dale Burkholder, choir director.
“Our goal is to create a memorable experience for our audience and to showcase the beauty of this unique art form.”
Silver Bells, one of the oldest community handbell choirs in North America, perform its musical art form at church concerts, long-term care facilities and annually during the Christmas open house at Willistead Manor.
New members are welcome to attend practices, which are held Tuesdays, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., at Emmanuel United Church, 1728 Lincoln Rd.
No experience is necessary.
Handbells are played by ringers who grasp the bell by its slightly flexible handle and move the wrist so that the clapper strikes the inside of the bell. Each bell plays one pitch so each ringer can play only about three notes and related sharps and flats.
Handbells developed in England in the 17th century and are available in a number of different sizes. Gloves are worn by ringers to prevent the sweat from their hands from marking the bells shiny surface.
Admission is free for the upcoming concert, which begins at 4 p.m.
